Disclosure: this page contains exchange invitation links and codes. If you sign up through them, the exchange may pay Jason Finance a referral commission. It does not raise the fees you pay; the invitation fee discount is set by the exchange. Our ratings follow the published methodology, where the invitation discount counts only toward the fees item.

A platform token fee discount means paying trading fees with the exchange’s own token (BNB, BGB, GT, MX and similar “platform tokens”) in return for lower fees. The discount is real, but it requires you to hold the platform token first, and its price goes up and down.

The short version: whether a platform token discount is worth it depends on whether the fees you save each month can outweigh how much the token you hold could fall. Checking official sources on 12 October 2026: Binance’s BNB discount is 25% on spot and 10% on futures; Bitget’s BGB discount is 20% on spot and does not apply to futures; Gate’s official article says the spot fee rate for regular users after the GT discount is 0.09%; MEXC’s 2024 announcement gives 20% for the MX discount and 50% for holding at least 1,000 MX continuously; and OKX’s OKB can no longer be used for a fee discount. If you trade small amounts, the savings are easily wiped out by swings in the token’s price. Even if you do use one, keeping only enough to cover a month or two of fees makes the risk much smaller.

This article is a summary of public information. It is not investment advice and does not recommend buying any platform token. Any platform token price changes in this article are hypothetical scenarios, not price predictions. Discount rules change, so check the exchange’s current fee page and account settings before you use one.

How platform token discounts work

The exchanges all do it in much the same way:

  1. Turn on the discount in your account: for example, on Binance you enable “Use BNB to pay for fees” in the fee settings, and on Bitget you enable the BGB discount on the VIP page.
  2. Keep the platform token in the matching account: spot fees are taken from the spot account, and for futures fees you first have to transfer the platform token to the futures account.
  3. The platform token pays the fee when an order fills: the system converts the discounted fee into the platform token and deducts it. If you don’t have enough of the token, the fee is paid at full price in the coin you traded, with no discount.

So the discount keeps using up your platform token, and you need to top it up regularly. And as long as you hold the token, its price changes are yours to bear.

BNB, OKB, BGB, GT and MX discount rules compared

Official rules checked on 12 October 2026:

Platform token Exchange Spot Futures Conditions Official source
BNB Binance 25% off 10% off USDⓈ-M futures Turn on the BNB discount; hold BNB in the spot account, and for futures first transfer BNB to the USDⓈ-M futures account Spot guide, futures guide
OKB OKX No discount No discount Holding OKB does not affect your fee tier OKX guide (updated 2026-09-01)
BGB Bitget 20% off (margin included) Not currently available Turn on the BGB discount; hold BGB in the spot account, and for margin keep it in the cross margin account Bitget guide (published 2024-01-04)
GT Gate 0.09% for regular users after the discount Not stated in the official article Account eligible for the GT discount Gate official article (updated 2026-09-15)
MX MEXC 20% off with the MX discount; 50% off for holding at least 1,000 MX for 15 consecutive days Same as spot The two cannot be combined, and 50% applies if you qualify for both; for futures first transfer MX to the futures account; some trading pairs are excluded August 2024 announcement, fee page

BNB: 25% on spot, 10% on futures

Binance’s official guide says spot and margin fees can be cut by up to 25%, and VIP users get this 25% on top of their VIP rates. Paying USDⓈ-M futures fees with BNB gives 10% off the regular rate; the BNB has to be transferred to the USDⓈ-M futures account first, and if the balance is not enough, the fee is paid in USDT at full price. Separately, Binance’s spot VIP tiers require holding a certain amount of BNB in addition to trading volume (see the “Binance review”); that is a different matter from the fee discount.

OKB: OKX no longer offers a platform token discount

OKX’s official guide, in the version updated in September 2026, states: OKB cannot be used to pay trading fees, and holding OKB does not affect your fee tier; fee tiers depend on 30-day trading volume and account assets (trading fee rules FAQ). Articles online about getting a discount by holding OKB describe the old system.

BGB: spot and margin only

Bitget’s guide says paying spot fees with BGB gives 20% off. Cross and isolated margin also qualify, but the BGB has to be kept in the cross margin account. Futures are not currently covered; Bitget only says it plans to add them in the future. This guide was published in 2024, and the live figures on Bitget’s fee page are loaded by a script, so go by what your account shows before you use it.

GT: the official article gives only the spot rate with the discount

Gate’s official article, updated in September 2026, says that a regular user (VIP 0) who qualifies for the GT discount pays 0.09% for both spot maker and taker. Compared with the regular rate given in the same article, that is about 10% less (this is my own conversion). The article does not give a futures rate with the GT discount, and it does not say what counts as “qualifying”; Gate’s fee page shows the full figures only after you log in.

MX: two options from a 2024 announcement

MEXC’s August 2024 announcement has two options: turn on the MX discount for 20% off spot and futures fees, or hold at least 1,000 MX for 15 consecutive days (based on daily snapshots of the spot account) for 50% off. The two cannot be combined, and 50% applies if you qualify for both. I could not find newer figures on MEXC’s official pages, and the current fee page does not load the discount percentages, so confirm them in your account before you use them. MEXC’s spot rates for regular users are in the table in the next section; where the maker fee is 0%, there is no fee to discount.

Bybit’s MNT and KuCoin’s KCS offer similar discounts; each exchange’s rules are summarized in the “International crypto exchange fee comparison”.

How much you save each month: work it out from your own volume

Fees saved each month = monthly trading volume × fee rate × discount

Use the fee rate you actually pay: for most people that is the taker fee on market orders, or the maker fee if your orders fill as limit orders on the book. Here are each exchange’s official rates for regular users, and the actual rates after the fee discount from an invitation code:

With a hypothetical fee rate of 0.1%, here is how much you save each month at different volumes and discount rates:

Monthly volume 10% discount 20% discount 25% discount
1,000 USDT 0.1 USDT 0.2 USDT 0.25 USDT
10,000 USDT 1 USDT 2 USDT 2.5 USDT
100,000 USDT 10 USDT 20 USDT 25 USDT
1,000,000 USDT 100 USDT 200 USDT 250 USDT

If you trade only a few thousand USDT a month, you save roughly a few USDT to a few tens of USDT a year.

Handy tool

Want to know first how much your monthly trading volume would cost in fees at each exchange? Enter your volume, maker share and number of withdrawals to see each exchange's monthly cost.

Start calculating

Is a platform token discount worth it: the break-even volume

The fees you save grow with your trading volume, while the price risk grows with the value of the platform token you hold. Put both into the same formula to compare them:

Fees saved over T months = V × f × d × T

Possible loss over the holding period = H × x (+ H × y × T ÷ 12)

  • V: monthly trading volume; f: fee rate; d: discount; T: how many months you plan to hold
  • H: value of the platform token you hold for the discount; x: the price drop you are willing to accept
  • y: the annual rate the same money could earn in USDT earn instead (opportunity cost; you can leave it out at first)

When the two sides are equal, you get the break-even monthly volume:

V* = H × x ÷ (f × d × T)

Only above V* do the fees you save outweigh the price drop scenario you set; below V*, if the platform token falls by that much, your loss on the token will be larger than the fees you saved. This formula and the example below are my own calculations, not figures provided by any exchange.

Example: one run with hypothetical numbers

All of the numbers below are hypothetical and only show how the calculation works. They do not represent the actual price or direction of any platform token:

  • Fee rate f = 0.1%, discount d = 25%
  • Platform token held H = 100 USDT, T = 12 months
  • Hypothetical scenario: the platform token falls x = 30% within a year (opportunity cost not included)

V* = 100 × 30% ÷ (0.1% × 25% × 12) = 30 ÷ 0.003 = 10,000 USDT a month.

In other words, under these assumptions, trading 10,000 USDT a month saves 30 USDT a year, exactly matching the loss if 100 USDT of platform token falls 30%. If you trade only 2,000 USDT a month, you save just 6 USDT a year, and a 6% price drop wipes out the savings.

With the same 100 USDT held for a year and an assumed 30% drop, here is the volume needed at different discount rates:

Discount Break-even monthly volume
25% 10,000 USDT
20% 12,500 USDT
10% 25,000 USDT

Reducing price risk: hold only enough to pay fees

The easiest part of the formula to control is H. The discount only needs enough platform token in the account to pay your fees, not a large amount:

  • The smaller H is, the smaller the risk: hold only enough to cover a month or two of fees, and even if the platform token falls sharply, you lose only that small amount. In the example above, trading 10,000 USDT a month costs about 7.5 USDT in fees after the discount, so about 15 USDT of platform token covers two months.
  • Options with a holding threshold are different: with an option such as MEXC’s “50% off for holding at least 1,000 MX”, H is fixed at 1,000 MX and cannot be reduced. Run the formula above before you decide.
  • Uses beyond the discount are a separate calculation: holding BNB for Binance VIP, or the platform token holdings some exchanges accept for VIP upgrades, are separate decisions, and the risk is still yours.

Using it with an invitation code fee discount: they multiply, they don’t add

The fee discount you get by signing up with an invitation code and the platform token discount are two different offers. When both apply, they multiply:

Share you actually pay = (1 − fee discount) × (1 − platform token discount)

With hypothetical numbers: a 20% fee discount and a 25% platform token discount mean you pay 0.8 × 0.75 = 60% of the original fee, a 40% saving, not 20% + 25% = 45%. When you see an “up to X%” figure made by simply adding two percentages, work it out again yourself. Whether both can apply at once, and from which amount they are calculated, depends on each exchange’s rules and your trade details. How the fee discount is calculated and how to check it applies are covered in “What is a crypto exchange fee discount”.

If you already have a fee discount, replace f in the break-even formula with your actual rate after the discount. Continuing the assumptions from the previous section, 0.1% with a 20% fee discount is 0.08%; multiplied by the 25% token discount, the fees saved each month fall by a fifth, and the break-even volume rises from 10,000 USDT to 12,500 USDT a month.

Check these before you turn on a platform token discount

  1. Whether the rule still exists: the OKB case shows that discounts can be withdrawn. Check the official fee page and your account settings before turning it on.
  2. Which markets it covers: spot, margin and futures differ by exchange, and some trading pairs are excluded.
  3. Which account holds the platform token: futures usually need a separate transfer, and if the account runs short, you pay the full fee.
  4. Your own volume and fee rate: first use the tool to work out your monthly fees, then see how much the discount saves. If you only buy a little now and then to hold long term, the savings are usually small.
  5. How much platform token to hold: hold only enough to pay fees, and set a price drop you can accept.

Fees are only part of the cost of trading; for spread and slippage, see “Are zero-fee exchanges really cheaper?”. When choosing an exchange, security, reserves and past incidents matter more than fees; the scoring method is in “Exchange rating methodology”.

Invitation codes for the exchanges in this article

Below are the invitation code boxes for the exchanges mentioned in this article. The fee discount from an invitation code and the platform token discount are two different offers; whether both can apply at once depends on each exchange’s rules.

FAQ

What is a platform token fee discount?

You pay trading fees with a token issued by the exchange itself and get a discount on those fees. For example, paying with BNB on Binance cuts spot fees by 25% and USDⓈ-M futures fees by 10%; paying with BGB on Bitget cuts spot fees by 20%. You first have to turn on the discount in your account and keep the platform token in the matching account.

Can OKB still be used to pay OKX fees at a discount?

No. OKX's official guide, in the version updated in September 2026, states that OKB cannot be used to pay trading fees and that holding OKB does not affect your fee tier; fee tiers depend on 30-day trading volume and account assets.

Do platform token discounts apply to futures?

It depends on the exchange. Binance's BNB cuts USDⓈ-M futures fees by 10%, but you first have to transfer BNB to the futures account. Bitget's BGB currently applies only to spot and margin. MEXC's MX applies to both spot and futures according to a 2024 announcement. Gate's official article gives only the spot fee rate with the GT discount.

How much do I need to trade each month for holding a platform token to be worth it?

Multiply the fees you save each month (volume × fee rate × discount) by the number of months you hold, and compare that with how much the platform token you hold could fall. With hypothetical numbers: a 0.1% fee rate, a 25% discount, 100 USDT of platform token held for a year and an assumed 30% drop, you need 10,000 USDT of monthly volume to break even.

Do the platform token discount and the invitation code fee discount add up?

They do not add up; when both apply, they multiply. Share you actually pay = (1 − fee discount) × (1 − platform token discount). For example, with a 20% fee discount and a 25% token discount, you pay 0.8 × 0.75 = 60% of the original fee, a 40% saving, not 45%. Whether both can apply at once depends on each exchange's rules.
